When Should You Start Wedding Dress Shopping? Your Complete Bridal Timeline
By Caroline, Manager at LA Bridal House
One of the questions I hear from brides all the time is:
“When should I start looking for my wedding dress?”
It’s a really important question — because while there’s no single perfect time for every bride, starting your wedding dress shopping at the right point can make the whole experience much more enjoyable.
If you’re getting married in Belfast, Carrickfergus, Antrim, Newtownabbey, Larne or anywhere else across Northern Ireland, here’s my guide to when to start wedding dress shopping and what to expect along the way.
How Early Should You Buy Your Wedding Dress?
As a general guide, I recommend starting your wedding dress search around 9–12 months before your wedding day.
This gives you plenty of time to:
Visit bridal shops
Try different wedding dress styles
Find the right designer and gown
Order your wedding dress
Allow time for alterations
Choose your bridal accessories
Enjoy the process without feeling rushed
That said, don’t panic if your wedding is sooner.
We regularly welcome brides who have less time before their wedding and there are often options available depending on your circumstances.
The most important thing is to speak to your bridal boutique as early as possible.
Your Wedding Dress Shopping Timeline
12+ Months Before Your Wedding
If you’re more than a year away from your wedding, this is a great time to start gathering inspiration.
Create a Pinterest board.
Save wedding dresses you love.
Look at different bridal designers.
Think about the type of wedding you’re planning.
Is it a romantic country wedding? A glamorous venue? A relaxed beach celebration? A traditional church wedding?
Your venue and overall wedding style can help you start thinking about the type of bridal gown you might feel most comfortable wearing.
But don’t worry about having everything figured out before your first appointment.
You might be surprised by what you fall in love with!
9–12 Months Before Your Wedding
This is an ideal time to start booking wedding dress appointments.
Visit a few bridal boutiques and try different silhouettes and styles.
You might have your heart set on a particular type of dress, only to discover that another style looks and feels completely amazing on you.
When you visit LA Bridal House, my advice is always:
Keep an open mind.
Bring photographs of dresses you like, but be willing to try something different too.
Sometimes your dream dress is the one you least expected.
6–9 Months Before Your Wedding
By this stage, many brides will have found their wedding dress.
Once you’ve chosen your gown, you can start thinking about the finishing touches.
These might include:
Veils
Hair accessories
Shoes
Jewellery
Wedding lingerie
Bridesmaid dresses
Alterations
This is also a good point to make sure you understand the expected delivery and alterations timeline for your dress.
Your bridal boutique should be able to guide you through what happens next.
3–6 Months Before Your Wedding
If your wedding dress has arrived, you can start looking at alterations and making sure your gown fits beautifully.
Remember that wedding dresses are often designed with alterations in mind, so don’t worry if your dress isn't a perfect fit straight off the hanger.
A professional seamstress can make adjustments to help create the right fit for you.
This is also a great time to finalise your accessories and think about how you want to style your hair and makeup.
What If My Wedding Is Less Than 6 Months Away?
This is something brides worry about more than they need to!
If you’re getting married in six months, three months or even sooner, don’t assume it’s too late to find your wedding dress.
Speak to bridal boutiques and explain your wedding date.
There may be dresses available that can work with your timeframe, depending on the designer, stock and alterations required.
At LA Bridal House, we’re always happy to talk through your options.
The key is not to put it off because you’re worried you’ve left it too late.
How Many Wedding Dresses Should You Try?
There’s no magic number.
Some brides find their dress at their first appointment.
Others need to visit several bridal shops before they know exactly what they want.
Try not to compare your experience with anyone else’s.
Wedding dress shopping is personal.
You might find your dream dress immediately.
Or you might need to try ten different styles before something suddenly feels right.
Both are completely normal.
What Should You Take to Your Bridal Appointment?
You don’t need to arrive with everything organised.
In fact, keeping things simple can make the experience much more enjoyable.
I recommend wearing comfortable underwear and bringing the people whose opinions you genuinely trust.
You can also bring inspiration photographs if you have them.
And most importantly, come with an open mind.
Your bridal consultant is there to help you explore different styles and find something that makes you feel amazing.

How Many People Should You Bring Wedding Dress Shopping?
This is another question brides often ask.
My advice?
Bring the people who make you feel good.
At LA Bridal House, your £25 bridal appointment gives you exclusive use of our boutique, so you can enjoy the experience with your mum, sisters, bridesmaids, friends or whoever you want by your side.
You don't need to bring a huge group just because you think you should.
Sometimes a small group of people who know you best can be much more helpful.
