Why "Just Order It a Size Up" Is Terrible Advice for Curvy Brides

We hear it constantly, secondhand, from brides who've been told this by other shops, family members, or well-meaning friends: "just order a size up, it'll be fine." It won't. And we're tired of watching brides get sold that advice like it's a solution instead of a shortcut that creates more problems than it solves.

Grading up isn't the same as designing for curves

Most wedding dress ranges are pattern-drafted for one body type, then mathematically "graded" up or down to make other sizes. The problem is that a body doesn't scale proportionally — going up in bust doesn't mean everything else expands the same amount, and a graded pattern doesn't know that. The result is a dress that technically fits your measurements on paper and sits wrong on your actual body: gaping at the waist, straining at the bust, a silhouette that was never drawn with your shape in mind to begin with.

That's why we stock Curves by Modeca and Every Body Every Bride — ranges that are cut for curves from the very first pattern, not adjusted afterward as an afterthought. It's a completely different starting point, and you can feel it the moment you put one on.

"It's fine, alterations will fix it" is doing a lot of heavy lifting

Alterations are brilliant for genuine tailoring — taking in a waist, adjusting a hem, refining a fit that's 90% there. They are not designed to rebuild a garment's entire structure. Asking a seamstress to fundamentally re-engineer a dress that was wrong for your shape from the start is expensive, time-consuming, and often still doesn't get you where a correctly-cut dress would've got you in the first fitting.

You shouldn't have to apologise for your body in a fitting room

We've had brides walk in already bracing for disappointment — expecting fewer options, worse fit, more compromise. That's not on them. That's on an industry that's treated curvier brides as an edge case for decades instead of designing properly for them from the start. It shouldn't take extra effort to feel beautiful in a dress that's finally cut correctly for you — it should be the standard, not the exception.

Here's our actual opinion, stated plainly

If a boutique's answer to your size is "we'll just order the next one up," that's not expertise, that's the absence of it. Go somewhere that stocks ranges genuinely designed for your shape, from the pattern up — not adjusted to accommodate it as an afterthought.

We stock Curves by Modeca and Every Body Every Bride precisely because every bride deserves a dress that was actually designed for her, not resized around her. Book an appointment in Carrickfergus — serving brides across Belfast, Larne, Newtownabbey, Ballyclare and County Antrim. Book here.

Why We Don't Do "Say Yes to the Dress" Theatrics

Reality TV has done a lot for the bridal industry's visibility and absolutely nothing for how appointments are actually run. So let's say plainly what we think of the format: we don't do it, and we do
