Wedding Dress Shopping Timeline: When to Actually Book Your Appointment

"How early is too early?" and "am I already too late?" are the two questions we get asked most, usually by brides who are quietly panicking about both at the same time. Here's the honest answer, not the generic "12-18 months" line every wedding website copies from every other wedding website.

The real driver isn't your wedding date — it's your dress

Most designer wedding dresses are made to order once you've bought them, not pulled off a shelf. That means the timeline that actually matters is: order time + alteration time + a buffer for life happening. For most of our designers, that's realistically 4–8 months from order to first fitting, then alterations on top. So if you're getting married in under 6 months, you're not "too late" — you just need to be looking now, and you likely need to lean toward dresses we hold in stock rather than a made-to-order piece.

12–18 months out: browse, don't commit

This is the window for building a general sense of what you like — silhouettes, necklines, whether you're drawn to structure (Stella York, Alberto Palatchi) or softness (Ariamo Light, Avenue by Josephine Scott). Come in for an appointment if you want, but don't feel pressure to say yes yet. You're gathering information, not making a final call.

9–12 months out: this is genuinely the sweet spot

Enough time for a made-to-order gown to arrive comfortably, with room for alterations and zero last-minute stress. If you're in this window, book your appointment now rather than "getting round to it" — this is exactly the stage where brides start losing time to indecision, and it's the easiest stage to actually just make the call.

6–9 months out: still completely fine, less room to dither

You can still order most designers comfortably, but this is where we'd gently push you to decide within the appointment rather than "thinking about it" for another month. The dress doesn't wait for you to feel ready — the order timeline is fixed regardless of how you feel.

Under 6 months out: don't panic, but do move now

This is where we start steering you toward in-stock gowns or designers with faster turnaround, rather than a full made-to-order piece with a long lead time. It's genuinely fine — we do this constantly — but it does mean booking this week, not next month.

The mistake we see most

It's not booking too late. It's booking on time, then not actually deciding for another two or three appointments because "I want to see more options first." More appointments don't necessarily bring more clarity — they often just bring more noise. If you've found a dress that made you stop talking, that's usually your answer, whatever stage of the timeline you're at.
